Steps to developing an abstinence plan.

  1. Make a commitment to postpone sex until marriage and get a symbol to carry with you (ring, bracelet, pendant, necklace, etc)
  2. Decide your physical limits (hugging, holding hands, affectionate kissing, passionate kissing)
  3. Develop standards for dating
  • date in groups
  • avoid spending time alone late at night
  • spend time in public places where people are around (movies, restaurants, etc)
  • always plan your dates ahead of time and tell someone (accountability partner)
  • avoid "R" rated movies with sexually explicit content
  • avoid drinking and drug use, which alter your ability to make decisions
  • date people with the same values/beliefs

4. Share your commitment with a parent or friend.  Make them an accountability partner

  • check in before and after a date
  • let them ask you the hard questions

5. Discuss your standards with your accountability partner
6. Discuss your goal and commitment with your boyfriend/girlfriend and their commitment to honor your                     beliefs and values
7. Develop a signal for you and your date to remind each other of your commitment if one of you starts to                       cross the line
